Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has questioned Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s governance following the murder of a 19-year-old student by cattle smugglers in UP’s Gorakhpur district.
He said that if such an incident happens in a ‘prominent city’ of the state, it indicates that either someone influential is involved in this illegal business or that the city has gone out of his control.

Posting on his X account on Tuesday, Akhilesh Yadav said that public anger against the government-protected cattle smugglers in Gorakhpur has erupted due to collusion between the government and the administration. He held the BJP government responsible for the situation, adding that if the police intervene to protect the cattle smugglers who killed the youth, it will expose the ruling party’s involvement in this illegal activity and further fuel public outrage.
The Samajwadi Party chief said that if such incidents are happening in a ‘prominent city’ of Uttar Pradesh, it indicates that either someone has a major stake in this illegal business or that the city has slipped out of the administration’s control. He added that, like the rest of the state, crime is at its peak here and criminals are ruling the roost. “In both cases, this is the main failure,” he said, emphasising that the victim’s family must get justice. He also asserted that justice will be delivered if the BJP is voted out.
It is worth mentioning that following the clash between the villagers and the cattle smugglers at Maua Chaapi village in Gorakhpur district’s Pipraich on Monday night, the cattle smugglers ran their pickup over Deepak, resulting in his death.
Meanwhile, reacting to the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list being conducted by the Election Commission under Supreme Court’s orders, Samajwadi Party state president Shyamlal Pal submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission on Tuesday, demanding that the voter list of 2003 and the date of commencement of the revision after the final publication on 7 January 2025 be provided free of cost.
This demand was made to ensure that the BLAs can fully cooperate with the BLOs in preparing an accurate voter list for the state.
In the memorandum submitted by the state president of the Samajwadi Party, it was stated that the names of about 15 crore 42 lakh voters are registered in the voter list across about 1.90 lakh polling stations in the state’s 403 assembly constituencies.
During the special revision, the voter list will be zeroed, and the BLOs will go door-to-door to verify each voter and fill out the “Enumeration Form”. In this process, BLAs (Booth Level Agents) of political parties will cooperate with BLOs to ensure the voter list is accurate and up-to-date. This will allow the deletion of names of deceased voters, those permanently transferred, multi-location entries, and missing voters from the voter list.
In this regard, Shyamlal Pal said that since 2003, polling stations have been managed and reorganised many times, resulting in changes to many booths and polling centres. He emphasised that it is very important to mark these changes accurately. Providing the voter list of each booth to the BLAs (Booth Level Agents), who cooperate with BLOs in the verification process, is essential to enable accurate voter list preparation.
