Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar flew back to his state after getting discharged from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Sunday. He was undergoing treatment for a pancreatic ailment at the hospital.

Reports say that the 62-year-old Parrikar was shifted briefly to the ICU on Sunday before a decision to discharge him was taken. The Goa CM had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS since 15 September.

“Parrikar’s health condition deteriorated in the early morning on Sunday and he was shifted to intensive care unit (ICU),” the AIIMS official said.

“Later he was released from the ICU and also discharged from the hospital,” the official added.

On Saturday, an official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) had said that the CM will be brought to Goa in a special flight on Sunday from Delhi.

The CM is likely to stay at his private residence in Panaji.

On Friday, Parrikar met Goa BJP’s core committee members and ministers from coalition partners at AIIMS to discuss ways to ensure his government functions normally during his absence from office due to ill health.

However, leaders of the ruling BJP and its allies, who met Parrikar separately, had ruled out any change in leadership in the coastal state.

Parrikar has been ailing since mid-February and has been treated at different hospitals including those in Goa, Mumbai and the US.

But Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik said that Parrikar should have completed his treatment before returning to Goa.

“I have got the news. I still cannot believe it. I met him day before yesterday. His health has improved over last 15 days but I feel he should stay there for a few days more,” he said.

Naik also said that it was imperative that Parrikar takes adequate rest as part of his healing process after being treated for advanced pancreatic cancer.

“After he returns, I will meet and speak to him. He must have returned (to Goa) because the last chemotherapy must have been administered. He can take future treatment in Goa,” he said.

Naik was part of the Goa BJP’s core committee that met Parrikar in Delhi on Friday to discuss about the development in the state.

Even as the Goa Congress continued to demand Parrikar’s resignation on health grounds, Naik dismissed any possibility of dissolution of the Goa Assembly and expressed confidence that the Parrikar-led government will complete its term.
