Heavy snowfall affected the reconstruction work at Kedarnath in district Ruderprayag on Sunday. The weather changed at late night on Saturday and the continuous snowfall has brought the mercury down to the freezing point.

Besides Kedarnath, snowfall was registered at many upper reaches of Uttarakhand. The temperature at Kedarnath has dipped to minus 13 degree Celsius, the coldest of the season. Manoj Semwal, a member of the reconstruction team said, “Snowfall started at 11 pm on Saturday and continued whole day on Sunday. We had to suspend the reconstruction work today.”

Kedarnath was draped in a white blanket of snow. Over 80 persons, including a small team of police is presently in Kedarnath. The snowfall has made the situation challenging for the reconstruction team. As Shobhan Singh Bisht says, “With the temperature dipping to minus 13 degree Celsius, the water supply lines have frozen and we are melting snow to get water for our daily needs.”

The Kedarnath reconstruction work is one of the dream projects of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This season, the temperature had dipped to minus 6-7 degree Celsius in the pilgrimage town, but with the fresh snowfall, the weather conditions have become extremely harsh.

The reconstruction team is presently involved in the construction of houses for priests, a safety-wall, Saraswati river Ghat, and Sankarcharya Samadhi restoration work.
