Four municipal corporation sweepers, three of them part-time workers, died of asphyxia at a public division disposal plant’s septic tank near Meat Market in Haryana’s Rohtak on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as permanent employee Anil Saini, 39, of Kaithal and part-time workers Sanjay Kumar, 26, of Uttar Pradesh, Dharmender, 35, and Ranjit Dhanak, 28, of Rohtak.

Earlier this month, seven people including four sanitation workers died of suffocation while cleaning a hotel’s septic tank in Fartikui village of Gujarat’s Vadodara.

Earlier, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) Chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala had said that as many as 801 sanitation workers have died while cleaning sewers in the country since 1993.
