Though Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu, he is registered as a voter in Mumbai. In the Vidhan Sabha elections, he exercised his franchise in Mumbai. As a person from Mumbai nominated for Vice Presidential polls, I will request all MPs from Maharashtra cutting across party lines to support him.
“It is a matter of pride for Mumbai. Since Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray represent the cause of Maharashtra, I will request them to support him,” Fadnavis told media persons here on Monday.
Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and chief party spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that his party welcomes the candidacy of Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan for the post of vice president with an open mind, but he remained non-committal about supporting Radhakrishnan since “he is an NDA candidate”.
“We are happy that he is the vice presidential candidate. Before him (then Maharashtra governor) Shankar Dayal Sharma was vice president and went on to become the president. When any person linked to Maharashtra is selected for such a constitutional post, we welcome it with an open mind, but he (Radhakrishnan) is an NDA candidate and the Shiv Sena is part of the INDIA bloc,” Sanjay Raut said.
Raut informed that All India Congress Committee general secretary K C Venugopal spoke to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray about the opposition’s candidate for the Vice President’s election scheduled for September 9.
Raut said that when Uddhav Thackeray was in New Delhi last week, there was a deliberation about the VP candidate and he conveyed his opinion to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
“We will discuss it (the opposition VP candidate) with Kharge. I don’t feel the Uddhav-led Shiv Sena should have any independent stand about this issue because Radhakrishnan is an NDA nominee and we have to take a decision as INDIA bloc with consensus. If the INDIA bloc and NDA develop a consensus then Shiv Sena will also be part of that process,” Raut said.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “I sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing the name of Radhakrishnan as the candidate for Vice President, and I extend my heartfelt best wishes to him. As a constituent of the NDA alliance. Shiv Sena offers full support and cooperation to Radhakrishnan. I am hopeful that he will achieve a significant victory. The experience he has gained as the Governor of Maharashtra will greatly benefit the country”.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP President said, “Congratulations to Radhakrishnan on being announced as NDA’s candidate for the Vice Presidential election. I am sure once elected, his long standing experience and dedication will only enrich this high constitutional office. Wishing him the very best”.
