Prominent Jat leader and a multi-term ex Lok Sabha Member Col Sona Ram Chaudhary passed away at a hospital in New Delhi following a massive cardiac attack late Wednesday night.

Col Chaudhary (84) was attending a meeting in New Delhi last evening when he had biting chest pain, he himself drove his car to reach the Apollo Hospital where doctors performed an emergency surgery.

After the surgery the 4-timer ex-MP had himself written a post on his X page to inform his followers about his health and stated that he was okay after the successful surgery.

However, suddenly he succumbed around 11:30 PM Wednesday night.

Sitting Lok Sabha MP from Barmer-Jaisalmer constituency Ummeda Ram(Congress) rushed to the hospital to see him.

Col Chaudhary quit the Army in 1994 to enter the politics, and during his political career he remained in the Congress as well as the BJP.

Beginning his career with Congress he was elected to the lower house of Parliament thrice in a row in 1996, 1998 and 1999 on the grand old party’s ticket. However, in 2004 he was defeated by BJP candidate Manvendra Singh, who is son of former Union Minister late Jaswant Singh.

In 2008 he contested and won on Baytoo assembly seat in Barmer district on a Congress ticket.

Ahead of the 2014 general elections he joined the BJP at the behest of the then Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and had contested the Barmer – Jaisalmer Lok Sabha seat on BJP ticket. He had won his fourth term defeating former Union Minister Jaswant Singh who then had contested as a rebel Independent.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, former CMs Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje and many dignitaries have condoled the Colonel’s demise.

In his Condolence message Sharma said ” Col Chaudhary’s demise has saddened me, my thoughts are with the bereaved family. I pray for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the kins to bear the loss”.

Sharma’s predecessor Gehlot said “Sad to hear of demise of Col Sona Ram Chaudhary. His services to the Army and in the politics would be always remembered. Me myself and Col Chaudhary worked together as MP and also as MLA for long”.

Former CM Raje said ” Four timer ex Barmer MP Col Sona Ram Chaudhary’s demise is a irreparable loss, he was a humane and fair hearted political figure and pro-active people’s representative.

LoP Rajasthan Tika Ram Jully, AICC General Secretary and former Rajasthan Deputy CM Sachin Pilot, Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra and several dignitaries have also remembered Col Sona Ram’s services to the nation.
