The Election Commission of India (ECI) wrapped up a pivotal two-day conference of Chief Electoral Officers at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi on Thursday, marking a decisive step towards ensuring meticulous preparations for the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, the conference brought together CEOs from all states and Union Territories. The gathering focused on finalising SIR’s readiness to guarantee accurate and inclusive voter lists, crucial for free and fair elections.

“This conference is not a routine check but a reaffirmation of our commitment to strengthen the foundation of our democracy through precise electoral roll management,” said CEC Kumar. “The accuracy and inclusiveness of voter lists are non-negotiable, and we expect every state and UT to be fully prepared,” he added.

Following up on the groundwork laid during a September 10 review session, the conference scrutinised progress in aligning current electors with those registered in the last SIR, emphasising data integrity and minimising discrepancies. Senior ECI officials addressed queries raised by the CEOs, ensuring clarity on the SIR process.

The conference also evaluated the training and deployment status of electoral functionaries, including District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant EROs, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and Booth Level Assistants (BLAs)—key personnel in the SIR exercise.

“Effective training and deployment of our electoral workforce are fundamental to upholding the credibility of elections,” noted Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu. “Their dedication directly enhances public confidence in the democratic process.”

In addition to collective sessions, the ECI conducted one-on-one interactions with CEOs from poll-bound states such as Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, tailoring support to regional election preparations.

As India approaches critical electoral milestones, the Commission’s strategic emphasis on transparency, coordination, and comprehensive readiness is poised to ensure that every eligible citizen’s voice is accurately recorded and fairly represented.

This conference underscores the ECI’s relentless pursuit of electoral excellence, reinforcing its role as the guardian of India’s democratic processes.
