Condemning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls being carried out in Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK and all its allies will hold massive protest demonstrations across the state next week on November 11.

“In utter disregard of the opposition from the opposition parties to the SIR since the very beginning, the EC, acting in an autocratic manner as a handmaiden of the Union Government, is carrying out the exercise when there are only a few months left for the assembly election in Tamil Nadu. Intended to disenfranchise the minorities and anti-BJP voters in a targeted manner, this conspiracy is being implemented with the active support of the Union Government. Without removing the glaring mistakes in the SIR in Bihar, proceeding with the exercise in 12 states is an attempt at burying democracy. The tearing hurry with which the EC is carrying this out raises suspicion,” a joint statement issued by the parties said on Thursday.

Detailing the practical difficulties in completing the SIR, it pointed out that with the Northeast monsoon getting active, the vast majority of the population engaged in agricultural and allied activities will not get the required time to fill up and submit the Enumeration Forms, resulting in mass deletions. Further, listing the issues that have cropped up in the last few days, the statement added, “Confirming the apprehension of many voters being removed from the electoral roll, the BLOs have not even started the distribution of Enumeration Forms. There is no proper communication and coordination between BLOs and BLA2. In many places, including Tirupur, the BLOs have compelled that the forms be filled out and submitted within a day. Even the 2002-2005 voter list on the EC website remains incomplete, creating confusion.”

“The EC has ignored the pleas to give up this exercise, which is a ploy of the poll panel to disenfranchise the genuine voters of Tamil Nadu,” according to the statement.
