Delhi court asks Shikhar Dhawan’s ex-wife to return Rs 5.72 crore she was paid under ‘alien’ Australian concept

The court noted that since the concept of “Property Settlement” was alien to the Indian legal system, the Australian court’s order asking Dhawan to pay the sum to his ex-wife was unsustainable on Indian soil.

A family court in Delhi has ordered former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan’s ex-wife Aesha Mukherjee,  an Australian national, to return approximately Rs 5.72 crores to him. Dhawan was asked to pay this amount to Mukherjee by a family court in Australia under the ‘Property Settlement’ concept.

However, the Delhi court held that the Australian family court’s order requiring Dhawan to transfer substantial funds under “Property Settlement” is not recognised ny Indian matrimonial laws.

The court stated that since the concept was alien to the Indian legal system, the Australian court’s order was unsustainable on Indian soil.

The court further directed Mukherjee to return the sum of Rs 5.72 crore to her ex-husband.

Dhawan and Aesha divorced in 2023. The couple was granted the divorce on grounds of “cruelty” inflicted by thr wife.

However, they have been involved in several legal battles ove financial settlements and custody of their son, Zoravar.

The development comes days after Dhawan married his Irish girlfriend Sophie Shine at a private ceremony in in Delhi.
