Construction of concrete bunkers for the safety of residents of villages along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LOC) in the Jammu division has been sped up in view of frequent shelling of these areas by Pakistan troops.

The centre has approved construction of about 14,000 bunkers in the Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts along with the IB and Rajouri and Poonch districts along the LOC.

Construction work in the mountainous Rajouri and Poonch districts was earlier held up because the cost of completing bunkers in these areas was higher than what had been sanctioned for the plains. However, the hurdle has been cleared by the centre by increasing the allocation for these areas.
