The Congress on Monday suspended its leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu after her “Rs 500 crore for CM post remark” kicked off a huge political row.
The suspension of Navjot, a former Congress MLA and the wife of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, was announced by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

“Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from the Primary Membership of the party with immediate effect,” read a one line suspension order signed and shared on X by Warring.
While the Congress has not cited any specific reason behind her suspension, the move comes after her recent allegations that “one who gives a suitcase of ₹500 crore becomes the Chief Minister.”
Her remarks were quickly picked up by the BJP and the AAP to target the Congress party.
As the backlash spiralled, Navjot clarified that her remarks were twisted and that the Congress party never demanded anything from her or her husband. “I am shocked to see the twist given to a straight comment. The Congress has never demanded anything from us. On being asked about Navjot becoming a CM face from any other party, I stated that we have no money to offer for a CM post. Listen carefully,” she said.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president D K Shivakumar has also dismissed Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s allegation that a leader needs to shell out Rs 500 crore to become Chief Minister in Punjab, saying that anyone making such a claim needs ‘treatment in a good mental hospital’.
Shivakumar, who is entangled in an alleged leadership tussle with Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, was speaking to reporters outside his Bengaluru residence when he was asked about her remarks. “Let us admit people who make such statements to a hospital. A good mental hospital.”
