While the Ministry of Home Affairs has denied that it was contemplating to order early delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress has favoured holding early delimitation of Constituencies in shortest possible time before the ensuing assembly elections in the State.
In a statement, JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that the party favours early delimitation in a time-bound manner and completion of the process before the conduct of assembly elections in the state.
He said that the party seeks early initiation of process of delimitation to be completed in shortest possible time, so that fresh elections to the state assembly are held in time in a short period, as per new constituencies.

He pointed out the freeze on the delimitation was done by the NDA during Vajpayee regime in 2001 whereby delimitation of parliamentary and assembly seats in all other states was deferred till fresh census after 2026. As a result, the similar amendment was made in the state constitution by the then National Conference government which was part of NDA.
The Congress said that since the BJP government at the centre has absolute majority and the state is under President’s Rule, let them initiate the process immediately and complete it before Assembly polls.
“The delimitation should be done in accordance with the Constitution and norms and procedure prescribed under law taking into account various parameters of population, area, terrain, topography and such other considerations in order to ensure complete justice with each and every area which hither too faced injustice, neglect or discrimination,” the party stated.
However, Sharma doubted the intention of BJP in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in the state and said this should not be another “political stunt” and election issue only like in the past along with several such commitments of BJP which remained unfulfilled.
