Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Abhishek Singhvi Saturday accused the government of systematically undermining constitutional institutions, asserting that Governors are made to act as “glorified agents” of the Centre.

Speaking at the AICC Law, Human Rights and RTI Department’s Legal Conclave, Singhvi said, “Governors today act as glorified agents of the ruling party, not constitutional empires.”

Singhvi alleged that the government has perfected the art of “constitutional mimicry,” using democratic symbols while hollowing out institutions.

He claimed that the ruling regime holds elections but erodes institutions, appoints judges but questions judicial independence, and sings patriotic songs while jailing young voices.

The Congress leader warned that democracy is being threatened not just by overt authoritarianism but also by subtle erosion of institutions. He emphasized that democracy dies not only when tanks roll out but also when institutions cave in, constitutional functionaries become partisan puppets, media becomes a megaphone instead of a mirror, and courts begin to delay what they dare not deny.

Singhvi urged citizens to reflect on how India reached this point and how to reclaim its republic. He emphasized the need to stop pretending that everything is business as usual and recognize the calculated design to convert democracy into dominance, pluralism into polarity, and the constitution into a convenience.
