Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai, on Tuesday, sought an explanation from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the attack on a professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Rai posted on his Facebook page, stating that a senior BHU professor was assaulted with an iron rod, resulting in the fracture of both his hands.

He questioned, “Just a few days ago, some BJP leaders were appointed members of BHU Executive Council and now attacks on teachers have begun within the campus. Has BHU been turned into a den of power-hungry goons and now longer remains an educational hub? The chief minister must answer — are even teachers not safe now?”

Notably, Rai had earlier opposed the inclusion of BJP MP (from Chandauli) Mahendra Nath Pandey and Mayor Ashok Tiwari in BHU’s Executive Council. “We will not allow Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to become an RSS stronghold,” he had said.

On his social media account, Rai had written, “In prestigious international universities like BHU, RSS-affiliated leaders are being appointed instead of educationists. Mahendra Nath Pandey, Dilip Patel, and Ashok Tiwari, what credentials do they hold in education and research? There are thousands of qualified professors, scientists, and Padma-awarded scholars in the country. But the RSS only wants to promote its own leaders. We will not let BHU become an RSS outpost!”
