A special court in Delhi on Friday convicted former coal secretary HC Gupta in a coal scam case involving Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd (KSSPL).

The court also convicted then joint secretary KS Kropha, then director KC Samaria in the Coal Ministry and KSSPL managing director Pawan Kumar Ahluwalia in the case. They were convicted for alleged irregularities in the allocation of Thesgora-B Rudrapuri coal block in Madhya Pradesh to KSSPL.

Special judge Bharat Parashar heard the case following an FIR lodged by the CBI, accusing the company of misrepresenting facts, including inflated net worth, to acquire the coal block.

Chartered Account Amit Goyal, who was also facing trial in the coal case, was acquitted from all charges.

On May 22, the court will deliver order on quantum of sentence.
