The foundation stone for the Rs 647 crore project for relining and the reconstruction of the Gang Canal-Ferozepur Feeder was laid by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, marking centenary celebrations of the 100-year old canal built by the erstwhile Bikaner Maharaja Ganga Singh.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chief Minister Sharma paid rich tributes to Ganga Singh, who had laid the foundation for the canal on this day in 1925. He said, “Ganga SinghJi’s futuristic, far-sighted vision had offered a long-term solution to the scarcity of water in the desert districts of Western Rajasthan. Even today, his vision is an effective vehicle in furthering our mission of attaining water adequacy in the scarcity-hit region by way of a canal system.”

Assuring all possible steps for the welfare of farmers, the CM also announced a hike of Rs 15 per quintal in the minimum support price (MSP) for sugar cane procurement.

The proposed works under the Ferozepur Feeder project, being shared by Rajasthan and Punjab, include Cement Concrete (CC) canal lining between RD 0 and 168.230, reconstruction of two head regulators, one cross regulator, 19 VRB/DRB, 3 railway crossing bridges and the new construction of one head regulator.

These works would pave the way for fetching surplus water from the Harike Barrage to the Feeder. This would enhance the availability of water in the canal system, which in turn would benefit farmers in 3.14 lakh hectare command area under the Gang Canal, in Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh districts.
