Decks are clear for the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) to begin a probe into the Odisha Police Sub-Inspector Recruitment Examination scam, with the Centre’s approval of the State Government’s recommendation in this regard.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on 22 October last, recommended the investigation of the much-publicized jobs-for-cash scam involving the police sub-inspector recruitment examination to the CBI.

The Crime Branch of the state government was investigating the case. However, in the wake of reports that the roots of the scam are spread to Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and other states and suspicion of the involvement of inter-state organized criminal gangs in it, the state government opted for a CBI probe into it, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday.
The alleged manipulation of the recruitment exam amid charges of overt patronage of top officials had triggered statewide uproar and raised serious questions on the government job recruitment exercise.
As many as 123 persons, including nine middlemen, were arrested for alleged involvement in the scam. The court granted bail to 114 job-seekers who had colluded with the scammers to pass the test. Nine others who perpetrated the scam by luring the aspirants to get the police SI job in exchange for a huge sum of money have been denied bail.
The middlemen were allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh sum in advance by the job seekers, who were told to pay an additional sum of Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh after getting the job.
