Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has been named in a chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It is the first chargesheet filed by the elite investigation agency in connection with a land scam against Hooda.

The chargesheet also names 32 other persons, including UPSC member Chattar Singh.

The case is about an alleged purchase of 400 acres of land from farmers in Gurugram’s Manesar and other areas at just Rs 100 crores resulting in a loss of Rs 1500 crores to the innocent landowners.

It is alleged that the land deal was done during the period 27 August 2004 to 24 August 2007 showing the threat of acquisition by the government.

The 70-year-old leader was the Chief Minister of Haryana from 2004 to 2014 and the chairperson of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) at the time of the purchase.

The agency registered the case in September 2015 and conducted raids on Hooda’s residence in 2016. In May 2017, the CBI had questioned Hooda.

The chargesheet was filed under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and cheating, and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
