The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a 41-km-long North-South corridor aimed at significantly enhancing connectivity across the Rajasthan capital while easing growing traffic congestion.
Announcing the decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod will be developed at a total cost of Rs 13,037.66 crore and will comprise 36 stations. “The project will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a 50:50 joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan,” he said after the Cabinet meeting.

The proposed corridor will link key economic and residential hubs such as Sitapura Industrial Area, VKI Area, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari and Vidhyadhar Nagar. Officials said underground stations are planned in the airport zone, while seamless integration with the existing Phase-1 corridor will be ensured through interchanges and feeder systems to create a unified metro network.
Currently, the 11.64-km Phase-1 corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar records an average daily ridership of around 60,000 passengers. With Phase-2 in place, authorities expect a substantial rise in ridership, boosting public transport usage and reducing dependence on private vehicles in the rapidly expanding city.
“The project has undergone comprehensive appraisal at multiple levels and has an Economic Internal Rate of Return above the prescribed threshold, indicating strong socio-economic viability,” Vaishnaw said, underscoring its long-term benefits.
Funding will be arranged through a combination of equity support from the Centre and the Rajasthan government, subordinate debt and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017. The project also aligns with the Rajasthan Transit-Oriented Development Policy-2025 and national goals for sustainable urban transport.
Targeted for completion by September 2031, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce congestion, cut vehicular emissions, and improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists. The North-South line will complement the existing East–West corridor, extending metro connectivity across Jaipur and integrating major residential, industrial and commercial areas, including the heritage walled city, into a seamless public transport network.
