A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJO) leaders, led by its West Bengal legislature party leader Suvendu Adhikari, on Friday, May 8, met Governor RN Ravi at the Lok Bhavan to formally stake its claim to form the government in the state.
The delegation also included West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, as well as several party MPs from the state and senior state party leaders, IANS reported.

While meeting the West Bengal Governor, Adhikari and Bhattacharya jointly handed over a letter staking formal claim for forming the new government in West Bengal carrying the signatures of all the newly-elected 207 BJP legislators.
Notably, the BJP has registered a historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, marking an end to Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government’s 15-year rule.
The oath-taking ceremony of the new BJP government in the state is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore as per the Bengali calendar.
The oath ceremony will be administered by the Governor in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from other BJP-ruled states, some members of the Union Cabinet as well as several top Central BJP leaders.
This comes after the West Bengal Governor on Thursday evening issued the order for dissolution of the earlier Assembly. This meant automatic dissolution of the previous Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in the state.
It must be noted that this decision automatically made Banerjee the former Chief Minister of the state, although she had not followed the traditional protocol of submitting her resignation to him.
However, Banerjee’s Facebook and X accounts continue to carry the tag of “Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal”.
Suvendu Adhikari is all set to become the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, succeeding Banerjee, who had occupied the post for the last 15 years since 2011, which marked the end of the 24-year Left Front regime in West Bengal and the beginning of the Trinamool Congress government.
