A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was, on Thursday, stabbed to death in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district, said the police. The incident occurred just a few hours ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister.

Asked if the family had complained about a political connection to the murder, the officer said, “A man has died, another is accused and the common practice of political blame-game has started. We are looking into the matter.”

Another BJP worker was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday night. The deceased, identified as Chandan Shaw, was a resident of Kankinara.

On Monday, bodies of two women, sister-in-law and niece of Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Moloy Ghatak, were recovered from a house in Asansol in a semi-decomposed condition.

According to the police, they went to the house in Hindustan Park area on Monday upon receiving information that foul smell was emanating from there, and recovered the bodies of Jayashri Ghatak, 61, and Nilam Ghatak, 38.

On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that she won’t attend Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony citing media reports on BJP raising the issue of political violence in the state.

Banerjee, the chief of Trinamool Congress (TMC), was slated to arrive in New Delhi to attend the oath ceremony. In a statement, Banerjee rejected outright the BJP’s charge that 54 people were killed in political violence in the state.
