Bharatiya Janata Party will celebrate 8 November, first anniversary of the demonetisation move, as ‘anti-black money day’, said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in a press conference on Wednesday.

The press conference comes the day the Election Commission of India announced two-phase elections in Gujarat —December 9 and 14.

According to media reports, during the press conference, Jaitley reiterated the government’s defense stating that “Major objectives behind demonetisation are already achieved” and added the Union government has expanded digitisation and tax base across the country to make the country less reliant on cash.

Jaitley said all prominent leaders, union ministers, state ministers and office bearers will participate in programmes across the country and added, on November 8, the party will organise programmes highlighting all the steps the government has taken against black money.

Jaitley also hit out at the Congress over its plans to observe the day because the demonetisation decision was “ill conceived”.

Earlier, the Opposition had said that they will observe 8 November as a ‘black-day’ with nationwide protests and rallies.

The 18 opposition parties had come together for the presidential and vice presidential elections and had decided to coordinate with each other to take on the government on various issues concerning the people. They had also decided to form a coordination committee.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also announced to hold a nationwide protest, “Dhokha Divas”, on 8 November to mark the completion of one year of demonetisation.
