J-K BJP chief Ravinder Raina confirms Thupstan Chewang’s resignation, says he wanted to go towards spirituality and shun politics

BJP suffers setback, Ladakh MP Thupstan Chhewang resigns

Thupstan Chhewang sent his resignation letter to state BJP chief Ravinder Raina.

In a major blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party, sitting Lok Sabha member from Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang put in his papers on Thursday. He also resigned from primary membership of the party.

In a letter to the Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina, Thupstan said he was resigning with immediate effect from primary membership of the BJP on “health grounds”. He said he was writing to the Speaker separately resigning from his Lok Sabha seat.

“I have to inform you that I am resigning from primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party on health grounds with immediate effect,” Thupstan wrote, adding: “I am also writing separately tot he Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha resigning as MP from Ladakh Parliamentary constituency.”

In a major victory for the BJP, he had won the Lok Sabha seat for the party in the 2014 general elections. This was for the first time that the BJP had won the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat.

Raina confirmed that Thupstan had resigned from the party but claimed that he had for been for the past some time saying he wanted to go towards spirituality and shun politics. He said the party had asked him to be in active politics till the 2019 elections.

Efforts to contact Thupstan Chhewang remained futile as his phones were switched off.

Though it was a big victory for the BJP in Ladakh in 2014, people had started getting disenchanted with the party with passage of time as it had failed to meet its commitment of granting union territory status to Ladakh.
