“These people say that they do not follow the Indian Constitution, but abide by the Shariat. So, they must be punished in the strictest way laid down in the Sharia law,” she maintained.
Usha Thakur, a former Minister of Culture in the previous BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, also stressed that the punishment must be so harsh that it deters others too from thinking of committing such crimes.
The Uttar Pradesh ATS arrested Jalauddin alias Chhangur Baba, his aide Nasreen alias Neetu, and two others on 5 July, on the basis of an FIR that alleges that the group operated as an organised gang, and targeted Hindu women and forced them to convert to Islam by luring them with money, false promises of marriage, and threats.
