Senior BJP leader and party’s National Council Member Sanjay Tandon has welcomed the move by the Chandigarh Administration to increase the Floor Area Ratio (FAR), terming it a progressive step towards urban development and economic growth. He expressed hope that the decision would be finalised at the earliest and implemented swiftly in the larger public interest.

Tandon said that he had consistently taken up the issue with senior functionaries of the Administration, including the Adviser and the Administrator, to expedite the process of enhancing FAR norms. He noted that the move has been under active consideration as part of broader efforts to reform building by-laws and promote vertical growth in the city.

Welcoming the policy direction, Tandon emphasised that the Administration should go a step further and allow the FAR increase without imposing any additional charges on residents and developers. He pointed out that neighbouring cities like Panchkula and Mohali have relatively liberal development norms, making them more attractive for real estate and industrial investments.

He asserted that a fee-free FAR increase would significantly boost investor confidence and encourage expansion across key sectors such as IT, healthcare, and education. “This reform has the potential to unlock Chandigarh’s economic capacity and transform it into a major hub for emerging industries,” he said.

It is worth noting that an 11-member committee has allowed the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) in Industrial Area, Phases 1 and 2, to be increased to 2, effectively allowing industries to construct nearly three times more built-up space than earlier.

Tandon reiterated that timely and investor-friendly implementation of FAR reforms would not only spur economic activity but also generate employment and enhance the city’s competitiveness in the region.
