Ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a significant increase in pensions for journalists under the ‘Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme’.

Now, all retired journalists registered with the Bihar government will get Rs 15,000 instead of Rs6000 per month.

He also announced a substantial hike in pension for their dependent spouse who will get a monthly pension of Rs10,000 instead of Rs3,000 for their lifetime.

In a message posted on ‘X’, Bihar CM stated that instructions have already been given to the concerned department.

He said: “I am pleased to inform that under the ‘Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme’, instructions have been given to the department to provide a monthly pension of Rs15,000 instead of Rs6,000 to all eligible journalists. Additionally, in the event of the death of journalists receiving a pension under the ‘Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme’, instructions have been given to provide their dependent spouse with a monthly pension of Rs10,000 instead of Rs3,000 for their lifetime.”

Nitish Kumar noted that journalists play a crucial role in democracy. They are the fourth pillar of democracy and have a significant role in social development.

He added: “We have been taking care of journalists’ facilities from the beginning so that they can perform their journalism impartially and live with dignity after retirement.”

The hike in pensions for journalists has come after a series of popular announcements made by the state government including the social security pension hike and 125 units of free electricity to every domestic consumer.
