Nandini Mukherjee Paul, wife of late Bengali actor and ex-TMC MP Tapas Paul, on Tuesday, June 2, levelled serious allegations against party supremo Mamata Banerjee. She has claimed that the former West Bengal Chief Minister abandoned her late husband during the toughest phase of his life, pushing him towards his death.

Nandini’s comments come after TMC’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections in the state that have led to internal conflicts within the party.

Several of the TMC MLAs have avoided meetings called by Mamata Banerjee and even accused the party leadership of forging signatures. Also, there are speculations doing rounds about resignations. As many as 50 MLAs from the party are said to be preparing to submit signatures against TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, IANS reported.

This atmosphere of unease has been intensified by Nandini’s latest accusations against Mamata Banerjee.

In a social media post, Nandini attacked the former chief minister without naming her, citing a comment by TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh. She stated that she felt uneasy after hearing Ghosh repeatedly speak about conscience on a TV show, and further questioned where Mamata Banerjee’s conscience was 20–25 years ago.

She later went on to ask whether people in the state voted for TMC candidates in 2001, 2006, and 2009 elections solely because of Mamata Banerjee’s popularity, suggesting instead that her late husband played a decisive role, according to IANS.

Notably, Tapas Paul was a two-time TMC MLA as well as a two-time Lok Sabha MP.

He first became an MLA in 2001 and was elected again in 2006 – a time when the TMC was in Opposition. Later on, he secured a victory from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in 2009.

Nandini Paul has indicated in her social media post that Tapas Paul’s electoral victories were due to his personal popularity rather than the TMC chief’s influence. She further claimed that her late husband was used for political purposes and even subjected to prolonged mental anguish. She added that he was ultimately pushed to the brink of death.
