West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was gheraoed by students protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University Tuesday morning, for the second consecutive day.

Besides the CAA, the students are protesting Dhankar’s public statements in support of the citizenship law as well as his “intervention” in the university’s annual convocation.

The students were seen holding posters which read “BJP activist Mr Jagdeep Dhankar Go back”.

Meanwhile, Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has accused the Mamata Banerjee-led state government of “putting education in captivity”.

“It is a painful moment for me as a Chancellor and Governor. Students are inside waiting to be handed over their degrees but a handful of people are blocking me outside. This is a total collapse of rule of law. The state government has put education in captivity,” he told reporters outside the university.

After being blocked by protesting students from entering the university, Dhankar left the campus.

On Monday too, the Governor was stopped from entering the university by the students.

While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has characterised the gubernatorial post as being a “nominated” one, the Governor ticked off the state government for the position of the constitutional head of the state becoming “seriously compromised”.

Dhankhar, who took oath as the Governor of West Bengal on July 30, had been at loggerheads with the state government over several issues — ranging from his support for the Citizenship Act to seating arrangement at a Durga Puja carnival to security upgrade — since he rushed to Jadavpur University on September to “rescue” Union minister Babul Supriyo, who was being “heckled” by a section of students.
