Backward panel submit report to UP CM; civic polls likely in April- May

After the Backward Class Commission submitted its report to chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday night, Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission has started preparations from afresh for the urban local bodies  elections in the state.

The Commission had started the proceedings considering the civic body elections as possible in the next two months, April-May. The Commission has fixed a detailed program for the revision of voter lists for the civic elections. The revision process will start from March 10. The final publication of the voter list will done on April 1. Youth who have completed 18 years of age on January 1, 2023 can enroll their names in the voter list.

Uttar Pradesh State Local Bodies Dedicated Backward Classes Commission headed by Justice ( Retd) Ram Avtar Singh was constituted in the last week of December, 2022 and it submitted its report on Thursday.

The Commission was constituted to determine the reservation of Other Backward Classes in civic elections on behalf of the state government on the directive of the Allahabad High Court.

After the submission of the 350 page report to the CM , the state cabinet meeting to be held tomorrow will approve the recommendation of the Commission.

UP government had set up the 5 member Commission ea in the last week of December, 2022 after HC quashed the OBC reservation done by the UP government in the civic polls without a triple test.
