Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi a ‘Ravan’, the demon king Lord Ram fought against.

CM Sarma’s remarks came in response to a question about the Congress leader attacking him during his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, which is passing through Assam.

“Why are you talking about Ravan today? Atleast talk about Ram today. We have the opportunity to talk about Ram after 500 years. We should only talk about him and not about Ravan,” the Assam CM said while refering to opening of Ram temple in Ayodhya today.

Ever since Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ entered Assam, the two leaders have been engaged in a war of words.

Last week, Rahul Gandhi had termed Sarma the most corrupt CM while address a gathering in Assam’s Lakhimpur. The Assam CM shot back, saying no one can be more corrupt than the Gandhi family.

Earlier today, massive drama unfolded when Rahul Gandhi was stopped from entering ‘Batadrava Than’, the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva in Nagaon district.

The Congress set on a dharna and accused CM Sarma of working under the pressure of Prime Minister Modi to prevent him from visiting the shrine of iconic saint.

“Will PM Modi now decide who will visit a temple and when?… We do not want to create any problems and simply pray at the temple,” Gandhi told reporters.

After negotiations, only the local MPs and MLAs, including Cong MP Gaurav Gogoi, were allowed to visit Bordowa Than.

“Sri Sri Shankardev ji has presented the thinking of Assam in the best way. He is our guru, we also follow his path. When I came here, I had thought of paying obeisance here. We got the invitation on 11th, but then we were told that everyone can go, but Rahul Gandhi cannot go. Whenever I get a chance, I will go,” Gandhi added.
