According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case relates to the killing of businessman-politician Ramavatar Jaggi in Raipur in 2003, when Ajit Jogi was the sitting Chief Minister.

In 2007, a special CBI court convicted 28 accused in the case but acquitted Amit Jogi, giving him the benefit of doubt.

The CBI had challenged Amit Jogi’s acquittal before the High Court, but the plea was initially dismissed due to delay. The agency then approached the Supreme Court, which allowed the appeal to be reconsidered after condoning the delay and sent the matter back to the High Court last year.

Following fresh proceedings, the High Court set aside the acquittal and convicted Jogi, asking him to surrender.

The conviction of Amit Jogi by the Chhattisgarh High Court marks a major turning point in a legal battle that has spanned over 23 years.

Family calls verdict long-awaited justice

The ruling marks a significant turn in a case that has spanned over two decades. Reacting to the judgment, Satish Jaggi, son of Ramavatar Jaggi, said the family welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to the court. He said the verdict was a fitting tribute to his father, adding that justice had finally been delivered after years of legal struggle.

“The Jaggi family welcomes this decision. We express our gratitude to the court. Today, my father has received a true tribute. The main accused in this case, Amit Jogi, has been asked by the court to surrender. My father was murdered in 2003, and today the court has pronounced the sentence on the main accused,” he said.
