National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Thursday met Russian President Valdimir Putin in Moscow.

Doval, who is in Russia to discuss cooperation between India and Russia in multilateral formats, also held talks with Secretary of Russia’s Security Council Sergey Shoigu.

“The parties discussed ways to further strengthen the Russia-India special and privileged strategic partnership and emphasized the importance of joint efforts in preparation of the bilateral summit by the end of this year,” according to a statement shared by news agency ANI.

“They also discussed cooperation between Russia and India in multilateral formats and exchanged views on topical issues of international security,” it added.

Meanwhile, the dates of Russian President Putin’s India visit has also been finalised. The announcement was made by Doval during earlier today.

“We were pleased to know about President Putin’s visit to our country. I think that the dates are almost finalized now, ” Doval said in a video released Russian state media Sputnik.

Refering to the India-Russia summit, Doval said that these summit meetings have always been watershed moments.

Doval’s Russia visit and meeting with Putin comes a day after US President imposed an additional 25 per cent tariffs on India for buying Russian Federation oil.

The US President had already imposed 25 per cent tariffs and an additional but unspecified penalty on India for its trade of energy and military equipment with Russia.

With this, the total tariffs on Indian imports to the United States have gone up to 50 per cent, highest among the major US trade partners and on par with Brazil.

India has defended its trade with Russia,  terming the US tariffs “unreasonable”. The Indian government has also vowed to take “all actions necessary” to defend its national interests.
