The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has announced a series of protest programmes across the state from September 4, intensifying its long-standing demand for the detection and expulsion of illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

The agitation will begin with an 11-hour hunger strike on September 4, followed by protest demonstrations on September 16, human chains on September 20, and mass rallies on September 23.

AASU leaders said the unchecked influx has led to large-scale encroachment on tribal belts, farmlands, satra lands, and forest reserves, posing a direct threat to the political rights, culture, economy, and demographic balance of indigenous communities.

The organisation also raised an alarm over what it described as the parallel entry of fundamentalist groups alongside migrants, warning that the situation could jeopardise not only Assam’s security but also that of the nation.

The issue of illegal migration has been central to Assam’s socio-political landscape for decades.

It was at the core of the six-year-long Assam Agitation (1979–1985), led by AASU itself, which culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. The Accord set March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for identifying foreign nationals in the state. However, AASU has repeatedly accused successive governments of failing to implement the Accord in letter and spirit.

Reiterating its stance, AASU demanded that the government immediately ensure proper identification and expulsion of illegal migrants, stressing that any delay would further endanger Assam’s identity and resources.
