The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday, May 1, said that 98.47 per cent of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation have been returned.

The central bank had announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. Since then, it has been periodically publishing the status of withdrawal of ₹2,000 banknotes.

Earlier, the total value of ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation stood at ₹3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of the currency was announced. It has come down to ₹5,451 crore at the close of business on April 30, 2026.

“Thus, 98.47% of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned,” read a statement from the RBI.

Notably, the facility to exchange ₹2,000 banknotes remains available across 19 issue offices of the central bank since May 19, 2023.

From October 9, 2023, the RBI issue offices have been accepting ₹2,000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts.

Also, it is receiving ₹2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country. It further informed that ₹2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.
