Sometimes an award show gives us more than glitz and glamour. It gives us a moment that feels bigger than television. That’s exactly what happened at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards when Tramell Tillman stepped onto the stage at the Peacock Theater.

The ‘Severance’ actor became the first Black man ever to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. It’s a milestone that took more than seven decades to arrive.

Tillman received the honor for his powerful performance as Seth Milchick, the mysterious and layered character who keeps viewers guessing in the hit Apple TV+ series.

The room erupted in applause as his name was announced. Fellow nominees cheered him on, including his own co-stars John Turturro and Zach Cherry, as well as Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Sam Rockwell, and James Marsden.

But the loudest cheer, it seemed, came from one person in the audience: his mother.

Tillman in his acceptance speech recalled the words of his very first acting coach, his mom. Quoting her advice with a smile, he said: “Do the work. Show up. And most importantly, don’t embarrass me in public.”

“Mama, you were there for me when no one else was,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “Your loving kindness stays with me, and this is for you.”

The win carried extra weight because of Emmy history. Variety noted that since the awards began in 1949, this was the only acting category that had never gone to a Black performer, until now.

The last time Black actors were even nominated in this slot was 2021, when Michael K. Williams, Giancarlo Esposito, and O-T Fagbenle competed but lost to Tobias Menzies.
