‘Retro’, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is not your usual love story. It’s a mix of romance, thrills, and mystery. Suriya plays Paarivel “Paari” Kannan, an orphan who grows up under the wing of a gangster.
As he tries to discover his real past, he gets caught between a dangerous cult, a destiny he didn’t ask for, and a love story that refuses to die.
Pooja Hegde stars as Rukmini, his lost love, and their chemistry on-screen has been one of the film’s biggest highlights. The film’s tagline ‘Love, Laughter, War’ perfectly sums up its tone; emotional yet packed with action.
The movie was shot in several beautiful locations like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ooty, Kerala, and Chennai. It features rich cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna, slick editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali, and a powerful music score by Santhosh Narayanan.
‘Retro’ hit theatres on 1st May 2025 and was released in both standard and EPIQ formats.
But the audience had no complaints. The film made between ₹200 to ₹250 crore globally; a huge hit considering its ₹60–65 crore budget. It’s also now the highest-grossing film of Suriya’s career.
While the success of ‘Kanimaa’ and ‘Retro’ continues, Pooja Hegde is already looking ahead. She’s all ready to charm Bollywood audiences next in the upcoming film ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’.
It’s a fun rom-com where she stars opposite Varun Dhawan, and the film promises to be a ride full of love, laughs, and drama. Directed by David Dhawan, the movie is going to release soon.
