Amazon has issued a strong public notice declaring that it alone owns all digital rights to ‘Drishyam 3’, much-awaited film starring Mohanlal.

The announcement has sparked chatter in film circles, especially because the ‘Drishyam’ franchise is known for its layered suspense. Now, even before the movie releases, real-life legal caution is adding another layer to the intrigue.

Amazon’s strong warning

Amazon Seller Services Private Limited made it official in a public statement. The company said it is the “sole and exclusive holder” of all digital rights to ‘Drishyam 3’. This includes SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, FVOD, and EST.

The rights come from existing agreements between Amazon and Aashirvad Cinemas, the production banner behind the film. According to Amazon, these agreements give it exclusive control, leaving no room for third-party negotiations.

The notice didn’t stop at clarification. It also warned that anyone, whether a platform, company, or individual, dealing with the film’s digital rights against Amazon’s exclusivity would be doing so “at their own risk, cost, and consequences.” The company even stated it reserves the right to take legal action, including seeking damages or injunctions, if its rights are violated.

Aashirvad Cinemas’ role explained

The notice also made another important point. Amazon clarified that even Aashirvad Cinemas, along with any of its assignees or licensees, does not have the authority to create third-party interest in the digital rights.

This essentially shuts the door on any speculation about multiple digital deals. The streaming giant emphasised that its rights are exclusive and that no additional licensing should be attempted.

A franchise that built massive expectations

All this drama comes because ‘Drishyam 3’ is the third chapter in one of Indian cinema’s most loved thrillers.

The franchise revolves around the clever and mysterious life of Georgekutty, played by Mohanlal, whose ability to outsmart investigations became legendary among fans.

The film was formally launched last September with a traditional puja ceremony near Kochi.

Director Jeethu Joseph shared an important hint about the storyline before shooting began. According to him, the film explores what happens in Georgekutty’s life four-and-a-half years after the previous events.

Why Part 3 happened

Producer Antony Perumbavoor explained that the third installment wasn’t rushed. The decision came after long discussions. He said the overwhelming response to the first two films convinced the team that Georgekutty’s story still had more to reveal.

Only after detailed talks with director Jeethu Joseph did the team finalise the new version.

The team shot in locations including Thodupuzha and Vagamon, both familiar backdrops from earlier parts. The final five-day schedule wrapped up in Ernakulam.

The original Drishyam, released in 2013, set new benchmarks in Malayalam cinema with its gripping narrative.

The sequel, Drishyam 2, released in 2021, was equally successful, attracting massive viewership both in theatres and on streaming platforms.
