The party lights weren’t even on yet, but something went terribly wrong on the sands of Rio. What was supposed to be a grand stage for global pop queen Shakira turned into a heartbreaking scene.
A construction worker, part of the crew building the massive setup for Shakira’s upcoming Brazil concert, lost his life in a tragic accident on Sunday afternoon (April 26). The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be one of the biggest live events on the beach this year.

A sudden accident during stage setup
The organisers of the “Todo Mundo no Rio” concert confirmed the devastating news in a statement shared on Instagram. Translated from Portuguese, the message revealed that a professional working on assembling the show’s structures died following an accident at the site.
According to the official note, emergency responders were quick to act. First aid was given immediately at the scene, and the fire department rushed the injured worker to a hospital. Despite all efforts, he could not be saved.
The organisers said they are now focused on supporting the victim’s family, as well as the company and team he worked with. They expressed solidarity and said they are offering all possible help during this difficult time.
What officials say happened
Details shared by the state fire brigade paint a clearer picture of the accident. Authorities confirmed that the worker suffered severe crushing injuries to his lower limbs while involved in a lifting system during the stage assembly.
Before rescue teams arrived, fellow workers had already managed to pull him out of the equipment. Soon after, military ambulance personnel from a nearby unit stepped in and began pre-hospital care.
He was then taken to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. However, despite the medical team’s efforts, he was declared dead.
Officials also confirmed that the man was part of the team working on building the stage for a public concert headlined by Shakira.
Eyewitness chaos and a massive event
For people nearby, the moment was sudden and shocking. A witness, 51-year-old Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, who was at the beach, described the panic. He said everything seemed normal until people suddenly started running. When others looked toward the structure, it had already collapsed.
He recalled that a man was trapped underneath, and those around rushed to pull him out in a desperate attempt to save him.
The concert itself is no small event. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro had already confirmed on social media that Shakira would headline this year’s “Todo Mundo no Rio” show, set to take place on the famous Copacabana Beach. He even shared a photo of the singer with a simple but exciting caption: “confirmed.”
Events at Copacabana Beach are known for drawing massive crowds. According to reports, past concerts at this iconic location have pulled in millions of tourists eager to watch global stars perform by the ocean.
