Robyn, Swedish pop star behind ‘Dancing On My Own,’ says she always hated Elon Musk, way before it was cool

Swedish pop star Robyn has revealed she’s always disliked Elon Musk, long before it became a trend. Her frustration began with his 2018 Tesla-in-space stunt, which she called ‘tacky’ and disrespectful to David Bowie.

Pop star Robyn has finally admitted what many were quietly thinking, she’s never been a fan of Elon Musk. The Swedish singer, best known for hits like ‘Dancing On My Own’ and ‘Call Your Girlfriend’, took no prisoners during a recent appearance on the ‘Las Culturistas’ podcast, where she unleashed a full-blown rant about the billionaire entrepreneur.

“I always hated Elon Musk. Way before it was cool,” Robyn said, drawing laughs and approving nods from hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “Because there was a time when it wasn’t cool to hate him.”

Her confession comes years before Musk became a household name for controversial tweets, corporate drama, and political meddling. Back then, Robyn recalls, the world mostly saw him as a quirky genius, not the polarising figure he is today.

A Tesla in space triggered the rage

Robyn revealed that her breaking point came in 2018 when Musk launched a cherry-red Tesla Roadster into space aboard a SpaceX rocket.

“As if there wasn’t enough stuff floating around already,” she said, visibly annoyed. “The idea that a commercial company can just decide what to do with natural resources, and then do something tacky like send a stupid car into space. It made me furious.”

Rogers agreed, joking that everything Musk does today is enough to make his “skin crawl.”

David Bowie would have been not amused

If Robyn’s anger wasn’t clear yet, she doubled down on one more point: the infamous use of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ during the Tesla launch.

“Just to sell cars?” she exclaimed. “Bowie would turn in his grave if he knew his song was being used like that.”

Her criticism wasn’t just about theatrics. Robyn made it clear that she’s consistently unimpressed by Musk’s mix of spectacle and showmanship, long before it became a trend to question the Tesla and SpaceX founder’s motives.

Public opinion finally catches up

Interestingly, Robyn’s early disdain seems to align with broader public sentiment existing today. A Gallup poll from August 2025 found 61% of Americans now view Musk negatively. This is 14 points jump since earlier surveys conducted before his controversial stint at Department of Government Efficiency.
