Actor Richa Chadha is all geared up for her film ‘Love Sonia‘, which is set to release in India after being widely acclaimed and screened at International Film Festivals.
The ‘Masaan‘ actor, who will be portraying the role of a sex worker for the first time in a film, says she was inspired by the characters played by Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Mandi‘.
‘Mandi‘ was a satirical comedy made in 1984, based on politics and prostitution. It featured some of the prominent names in the industry such as Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Neena Gupta.
Richa Chadha, well known for her unconventional roles in films, said she watched ‘Mandi‘ several times to work on the diction, body language and the behavior of characters.
Her role as a commercial sex worker is an ode to ‘Mandi‘, a film which changed the way Hindi movies looked at sex workers.
Love Sonia also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Mrunal Thakur, Richa Chadha, Frieda Pinto, Sai Tamhankar, Rajkumar Rao, Anupam Kher, and Demi Moore.
The film is directed by Tabrez Noorani and will be hitting the screens on 14 September 2018.
