A serious case has been registered against Kerala-based rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali. A young woman doctor has accused him of repeatedly raping her over a period of two years after promising marriage.

The complaint was filed at the Kochi city police station, and Kerala Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered under Section 376(2) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with repeated sexual assault.

According to the young doctor, she met Vedan on social media in 2021. They got close, and over time, he reportedly took her to various places. During these trips, she alleges, he had physical relations with her multiple times, always under the promise that he would eventually marry her.

This is not the first time Vedan has found himself in trouble with the law. In April this year, they arrested him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He had a possession of six grams of ganja at a flat in Kochi.

In another bizarre case, Vedan was booked under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was wearing a pendant believed to be made from a leopard’s tooth. Although some sections of the public defended him at the time, calling the action by forest officials “too harsh,” it still added to his growing list of controversies.

Despite his brushes with the law, Vedan has seen growing support in recent times, especially from the Kerala government. The ruling party even invited him to perform at events celebrating its 10 years in power.

Vedan also received academic recognition recently when the University of Calicut decided to include one of his songs in its Malayalam literature curriculum. The song, ‘Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam’ (The Earth Where I Stay), was to be studied alongside Michael Jackson’s ‘They Don’t Care About Us’.
