Singer Mariah Carey recently opened up about her long-standing tension with rapper Eminem during a fun segment on ‘Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen’. The 56-year-old pop icon was asked about the rumors linking their so-called “feud” to Eminem’s 2002 film ‘8 Mile’.
During the show, Andy Cohen played the game “Plead the Fifth” with Mariah. He asked her about a claim that the feud started because Eminem wanted her to play his mother in ‘8 Mile’.

Carey’s answer was classic Mariah: vague, a little teasing, and full of humor.
“From what I heard, there is truth to that,” Carey said. “But I don’t think that he actually… well, who knows who approached who?” She added that whether this sparked a feud depends entirely on Eminem’s side of the story. “I really don’t care. Like, whatever he’s said, then I’m that, fine. Not really. But that’s a rap lyric,” she quipped.
The rumor itself comes from music producer Damion ‘Damizza’ Young. Back in June, he told the TFU podcast that Eminem, 52, had considered Mariah Carey for the role of his mother in ‘8 Mile’. According to Damizza, Carey’s “insecurities kicked in big time,” and she didn’t take the offer. The role eventually went to Kim Basinger.
The Mariah Carey-Eminem saga isn’t new. Eminem has publicly said that he and Carey dated briefly. On his Shade 45 channel, he admitted, “Yes, me and Mariah did have a relationship for about a good six, seven months. (But) it didn’t work. I wasn’t really into what she was into; our personalities collided. She’s a diva, and I’m a little more regular, I guess.” He also criticized Carey for denying their relationship, calling it “bad.”
Mariah, however, has always denied that anything serious ever happened. In the past, she clarified, “I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don’t consider that dating somebody.”
But even now, more than two decades later, the old headlines and rumors keep coming back.
