British actor Keira Knightley has spoken out after learning about the ongoing boycott surrounding the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. The star recently joined the upcoming audiobook series, ‘Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions’. But she says she wasn’t aware of the controversy before signing on.
The new project, produced by Pottermore Publishing and Audible, features a range of actors bringing JK Rowling’s famous story to life in a fresh audio format. Knightley will voice the role of Professor Dolores Umbridge. She is one of the most disliked characters in the magical series.

In a recent interview, Keira Knightley admitted she didn’t know about the backlash against the franchise when she agreed to participate. “I was not aware of that, no. I’m very sorry,” she said, as reported by ‘Deadline’. “I think we’re all living in a time where we have to learn to coexist, even when our opinions differ. And I just hope we can all find respect.”
The “boycott” movement against the ‘Harry Potter’ universe began after author JK Rowling made several public statements that many considered to be anti-trans. The controversy reignited recently when she supported a UK Supreme Court ruling that prevents trans women from being legally recognised as women.
Following her comments, over 400 people from the British film and television industry signed an open letter urging stronger action to protect trans rights in the UK. Among those who signed was actor Paapa Essiedu, who has been cast as Professor Snape in HBO Max’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ live-action series.
Despite the ongoing debate, Rowling remains deeply involved in the development of the new TV adaptation. She confirmed that she worked closely with the writers and helped pitch the series to Warner Bros. Television. Rowling will also serve as an executive producer through her company, Brontë Film and TV.
HBO’s Chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, recently addressed her role, saying, “She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful.”
Bloys also noted that the network’s focus will remain on the core values of the ‘Harry Potter’ story. “Our priority is what’s on the screen,” he said. “The story is ultimately about love, acceptance, and hope. And that’s what we want to highlight.”
