Emma Watson, the actress who grew up as Hermione Granger on the big screen, has shared some heartfelt thoughts about her complicated relationship with ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling and what life has been like since stepping away from acting.
In a recent interview on the popular “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast, Watson reflected on both her past and her present in a candid conversation.

Fans of the wizarding world know Watson as the intelligent, brave, and endlessly loyal Hermione. But off-screen, her connection with Rowling has become more complicated in recent years.
The controversy began in 2020, when Rowling made comments about transgender people that sparked widespread criticism. Watson, ever conscious of social justice, responded with a statement supporting the transgender community.
“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” she stated.
On Shetty’s podcast, Emma Watson addressed the reaction of JK Rowling to her stance. This included the author’s remarks that she would “never forgive” Watson and that some of her co-stars now “ruin” the movies for her.
But Watson had a measured response. She explained that her respect and fond memories of Rowling, the person she met and worked with for over a decade, remain intact.
“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “I will never believe that one negates the other. And, that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish.”
Watson made it clear that she values dialogue and understanding, even when opinions differ. “I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” she explained.
When asked if she remains open to talking with Rowling, Watson replied simply, “Yeah, and I always will. I believe in that. I believe in that completely.”
