After creating waves at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 with a nine-minute standing ovation, Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Homebound’ is all ready for another prestigious stop on its festival journey, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025.
On Wednesday, producer Karan Johar took to Instagram to share the big news. His post read,
“#Homebound has been officially selected for the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 (@tiff_net) in the Gala Presentations category. Extremely thrilled and elated to be a part of this prestigious festival, another time for us at Dharma.”

The film features Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa in leading roles. It tells the story of two childhood friends from a small village in North India, both dreaming of joining the police force.
Their quest for dignity and a better life brings them close to their goal, but also tests the friendship they’ve cherished since childhood.
As desperation mounts, the film dives deep into the emotional complexities of survival and self-worth.
‘Homebound’ at TIFF:
Director Neeraj Ghaywan, who earlier made waves with ‘Masaan’ in 2015, has called ‘Homebound’ “a deeply personal story about friendship, dignity, and survival.”
Ghaywan explained that the film shines a light on people who have little to no presence in mainstream narratives. “It’s about those who quietly carry on, holding up the weight of their lives with a strength that often goes unnoticed. My hope is that the film encourages us to pause, reflect, and approach these lives with more empathy.”
Adding to the film’s global buzz is none other than legendary director Martin Scorsese, who has joined the project as an executive producer.
Scorsese, who has long been an admirer of Ghaywan’s work since ‘Masaan’, expressed his support openly.
“I loved Neeraj’s first film back in 2015, and when I read the script for ‘Homebound’, I knew it was something special. It’s a beautiful film that brings forward voices and stories from Indian society that people should hear. I’m proud to be associated with it.”
Earlier this year, ‘Homebound’ had its world premiere in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section at Cannes, where it received a standing ovation for nearly nine minutes.
