The family released a heartfelt statement saying, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
From “Meathead” to Hollywood director
Rob Reiner first captured hearts as Michael “Meathead” Stivic, the rebellious son-in-law on the iconic CBS sitcom ‘All in the Family’. His performance earned Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1974 and 1978.
He made his directorial debut with This Is Spinal Tap (1984). This hilarious mockumentary went on to influence generations of filmmakers.
From there he carved out a career full of critically acclaimed and widely loved films across multiple genres.
A legacy of timeless films
The late 1980s and early 1990s were golden period for Reiner. He directed coming-of-age drama Stand By Me (1986). He then did whimsical fantasy The Princess Bride (1987) and romantic comedy classic When Harry Met Sally… (1989).
He went further with thriller Misery (1990) and courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992).
In 1987, Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment producing not only his films but other hits like In the Line of Fire and Needful Things.
In a 2008 interview with ‘The Guardian’, he said, “Studios are looking for hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars in profit and you’re not going to get it with a little movie… But I came into this business to express myself and tell stories, not just churn out a product.”
Beyond the screen, Reiner was popular for his outspoken political activism. A strong advocate for Democratic causes, gay rights, and social justice, he was a progressive voice in Hollywood for decades.
Though he once considered running for office, he chose to dedicate his energy to advocacy rather than politics.
Early life and family
Born March 6, 1947, in the Bronx, Reiner grew up surrounded by the entertainment world. He was the son of legendary writer and comedian Carl Reiner, which exposed him to showbiz from an early age. He studied film at UCLA, and his early acting credits included appearances on ‘Batman’, ‘That Girl’, and ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’, as well as his father’s film ‘Enter Laughing’ (1967).
Rob Reiner is survived by his children Jake, Nick, and Romy, and by actress Tracy Reiner, his adoptive daughter from his first marriage to the late Penny Marshall.
