‘General Hospital’ hit a major milestone on July 13, airing its 16,000th episode. The show used the occasion to bring back a fan favourite character and introduce a new one named after a beloved cast member who passed away last year.
A landmark episode
The 16,000th episode saw Jason Morgan, played by Steve Burton, return to Port Charles, the show’s fictional hometown. The same episode brought a reunion between Anna, played by Finola Hughes, and Valentin, played by James Patrick Stuart.

‘General Hospital’ first aired in 1963. It is now in its 64th year on air, making it the longest running scripted American drama still in production. It also holds the record for the most Daytime Emmy wins of any show, with 18 wins so far.
A new doctor joins Port Charles
Along with the returning storylines, the episode introduced a new surgeon at the hospital named Dr. Tristan Roberts, played by Dean Geyer. The character’s name is a direct tribute to Tristan Rogers, the actor who played Robert Scorpio on the show for decades.
Rogers first joined General Hospital in 1980 and played the role on and off through 2025. He died on August 15, 2025, at the age of 79, after revealing a lung cancer diagnosis just weeks earlier.
Geyer, who was born in South Africa and later moved to Australia, is known for roles on Glee, 9-1-1 and the Australian soap Neighbours. His scenes for the milestone episode marked his very first day filming on General Hospital.
Behind the new character
Head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten have described the new character as an accomplished and witty surgeon who arrives in Port Charles hoping for a fresh start. According to the writers, Tristan Roberts will find that a clean break from his past is not so simple, since his new home turns out to have unexpected ties to people he thought he had left behind.
The writers also teased an early conflict between Roberts and Britt, played by Kelly Thiebaud, hinting the two characters get off to a rocky start when they first meet.
Celebrating the milestone
Cast and crew marked the taping of the 16,000th episode back on June 1 with a small on set celebration, complete with cake. The show shared a video of the gathering on social media, thanking fans for sticking with the series through 63 years and 16,000 episodes.
Longtime cast members including Maurice Benard, Laura Wright, Lynn Herring and Kristina Wagner took part in interviews reflecting on the show’s long run. Benard, who has played Sonny Corinthos for decades, said the milestone still feels surreal to him.
