It’s not often that Saif Ali Khan speaks about his past, but when he does, it’s with honesty, humour, and of course with a touch of nostalgia. In his latest appearance on ‘Too Much with Kajol & Twinkle’, the actor looked back on one of the most defining chapters of his life, his relationship with Amrita Singh.
What started as a casual recollection soon turned into an emotional reflection. Saif Ali Khan admitted that Amrita Singh played a major role in helping him find his footing, both personally and professionally, during his early years in Bollywood.

“I’ve spoken about it a lot, and obviously, 21 is a young age, and things change,” Saif said, his tone both candid and respectful. “We know that things didn’t work out, but apart from having two wonderful, wonderful children, I don’t think I’ve said before how important Amrita was in my life. She helped me understand my way through the film industry and quite a few other things. Her contribution at that time was invaluable. It’s a pity things didn’t work out.”

For a generation that has grown up watching Saif’s children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, step into the spotlight, it was a rare moment of reflection from the man behind the royal charm. He didn’t shy away from giving credit where it was due to a woman who was already a star when he was just starting out.
Kajol, ever the witty conversationalist, couldn’t resist teasing him, quipping, “But she brought you up well.” Saif burst into laughter and agreed, adding, “There were some really important and learning years, and like I said, she’s a wonderful mom. I’m very lucky. My ex-wife and I get along well enough. We usually speak about important things… and usually when I’m in a hospital bed.” He chuckled, adding, “Which is actually quite often. So yeah, it’s a regular kind of contact.”
The love story of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh began over three decades ago, on the sets of ‘Bekhudi’. Saif, then a newcomer, had been cast in the lead role before being replaced. But fate had a different plan. It introduced him to Amrita, an established actress known for her strong screen presence and sharp wit.
Sparks flew quickly, and the two married in 1991, even before Saif made his debut in films. Their relationship, unconventional for the time, often made headlines. But like many showbiz romances, it eventually came to an end.
The couple divorced in 2004, but they continued to remain connected through their children. Today, Sara and Ibrahim are both carving their own space in Bollywood.
Now happily married to Kareena Kapoor Khan, with whom he shares two sons, Taimur and Jehangir, Saif seems content and balanced.
