Pankaj Tripathi’s mother, Hemwanti Devi, passes away; actor grieves quietly in Bihar

This tragedy comes just over a year after Tripathi’s father, Pandit Banaras Tiwari, passed away in August 2023. At that time, Pankaj Tripathi had been in Mumbai promoting his film ‘OMG 2’ when he rushed back to Bihar for the last rites.

Actor Pankaj Tripathi has lost his mother, Hemwanti Devi. She passed away at the age of 89 at the family’s ancestral home in Belsand located in the Gopalganj district of Bihar. According to the family, she had been unwell for quite some time and breathed her last peacefully in her sleep.

A statement issued by Pankaj Tripathi’s team shared the sad news and requested privacy during this difficult time. It mentioned that she was surrounded by loved ones at the moment of her passing and Tripathi was beside her in her final moments. Her funeral took place in Belsand on Saturday attended by close family, friends, and relatives.

The statement expressed deep sorrow from the family saying they are going through a huge emotional loss. They also thanked everyone for their prayers and urged the media and well-wishers to give them space as they mourn.

Pankaj Tripathi has frequently shared stories from his childhood in rural Bihar. His father was a farmer and a priest, and a young Pankaj helped him in both fields before discovering his love for acting. He found his passion in college theatre in Patna. Later he polished the craft at National School of Drama in Delhi.

After his training, he moved to Mumbai with big dreams. But he had to face years of struggle working in small roles.

That moment arrived with Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ which changed the course of his career. Since then Tripathi has become one of the most respected names in Indian cinema in addition to streaming content.

From powerful roles in films like ‘Newton’, ‘Masaan’, and ‘Mimi’ to fan-favourite performances in web shows like ‘Mirzapur’, he has earned praise for his effortless acting.
