Usha Laxman, daughter-in-law of the late artist, shared the family’s feelings about the event. She revealed that the concert will not just be about music. It will be a heartfelt moment to remember RK Laxman’s extraordinary contribution to Indian art and storytelling.
And the first person to receive this brand-new honour? It is someone who is known for perfection and passion: Aamir Khan. Calling it the “biggest tribute” from the family, Usha Laxman said they could think of no better personality to start this award with.
RK Laxman remains one of the most loved cartoonists India has ever seen. His sharp humour and simple drawings, and deep understanding of everyday life made him a household name. His iconic creation “The Common Man” stood silently in his famous cartoon series “You Said It” pointing out society’s joys, struggles, and ironies.
He also brought life to the world of “Malgudi Days” sketching characters for the beloved TV series based on the writings of his brother RK Narayan. Generations grew up smiling at his art.
RK Laxman passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. Over his lifetime, he received top national honours. These include the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore.
